Worms...Living or Nonliving!

Hello everybody!! I am so glad October is here!! We kicked off our Living and Non-living Science unit with ooey gooey worms! I began the lesson reading Diary of a Worm. I just love incorporating literacy with every lesson!
After we read the story, we discussed the text and completed a sequence response sheet and a Diary of a Worm Book Report. You can find these at my TPT store under my worm unit titled Creepy Crawling with Diary of a Worm. On day 2 I read the story again and introduce non-fiction books about worms. We completed the circle map of Worms also included in my Worm unit on TPT:)
On day 3 we were ready for our worm investigation. I had a wonderful parent volunteer make Dirt Cups with a group...here is the supplies:
Chocolate pudding...I went ahead and made it the night before but you can have your class stir the ingredients, oreo cookies. plastic cups, spoons, and a gummy worm...YUMMY! At the independent work station, my students completed a worm can, have and are response sheet...also found in my worm packet:), and at my station we explored real live, creepy, crawly WORMS!
They loved it!!! Me...not so much. No worms were harmed in this investigation. We compared and contrasted the real earthworm with a gummy worm and completed our Earthworm vs. Gummy Worm response sheet...you guessed it...also included in my packet:)
This was a fun day and my students really enjoyed working with the worms. Like I said the worms were not harmed in this lesson, however, when I took them home my husband and children took them fishing and well...we know how that ends...my son let them all go free:)
